The Rijksmuseum at Museumplein:

On clear and sunny February days–when no clouds are in sight–Amsterdam shines. And the Rijksmuseum is no exception. Yet February is also my least favorite month; the city is nearly always covered in a blanket of gray. Almost all of the city's vegetation is at its most morbid state, and the sun sets around 16:00–and the lack of light leaves the soul thirsty for signs, any sign, of spring...

A Charles Dickens' Deventer:

Back in December 2010, I went to Deventer, in Overijssel, for the city's annual Dickens FestijnIt's basically one large recreation of Dickens' Victorian-era England, right inside Deventer's oh-so-charmingly-beautiful city center. The city was part of the Hanseatic League, meaning the city was wealthy during its hey-day, occurring throughout the thirteenth through seventeenth centuries. These days that wealth translates to beautifully restored homes, complete with the most spectacular gables. Deventer is a pleasant surprise.
